Reflection on Social Media Case 11: OK Go Gravity Song

I thought that this was a very interesting case, I did not understand why Ok Go did not want to post or release their video to YouTube but they wanted to through Facebook. If I was them and wanting to get exposure I would have wanted to release it to both so that I could get it out there as much as possible. They felt though that they had a better chance through Facebook to have their video spread faster. The mistake was though that the airline S7 released the video to YouTube without the bands permission. I felt that it was uncalled for that the airline did it, although they did it for themselves to promote their airline it was very selfish. Ok Go was in the right when asking them to take down the video because they broke the contract when releasing the video without permission and it was cool that YouTube cooperated and took down the video. Personally, I feel that Facebook is beginning to take over YouTube because it is more convenient than YouTube. When I watch music videos or funny videos I go on Facebook and look because I know they will be there. I hardly ever go on YouTube anymore and search for videos. In the article attached, https://moz.com/blog/facebook-vs-youtube, it talks about the competition between the two. It compares a bunch of stats between the two trying to figure out if Facebook is up and coming because YouTube used to be the go to when looking up videos. The next article I have attached, http://www.thefader.com/2017/05/15/leak-week-snippet-social-media-twitter, talks about the 11 greatest leaked songs on social media. Leaked songs mean they were posted or got out through a third party before they were supposed to and now because of social media this is a very common occurrence these days. Once this happens it is hard to do anything about it. In the old days this wasn’t ever a problem because they didn’t have a platform to leak it to but now with social media they do and it is something we are starting to see a lot more commonly.

  1. I thought it was interesting that you focused on how social media platforms can be a way to leak videos. While I agree that the airline was in the wrong to post the video, it is crazy to me that one day can make such a big difference on when a video is posted. Nice job.
