Reflection on Social Media Case 9: Ponderize

This week’s case study was about Devin Durrant and his son and a story I have never heard of, it is about the LDS church and I am not LDS so that may be why. Durrant who is a big name around the church and reffered to as, “Elder” gave a testimony about pondering and memorizing various bible verses. It seemed like everything Devin Durrant did in my opinion was okay but I think that changed when the business side of him came out. Durrant’s son after the testimony began using websites to promote their “brand.” They used the wrong platform to benefit personally from and promote himself. It seemed very skeptical once I found out that the son of Durrant immediately began selling t-shirts after his dad’s church presentation. Once they got a bad rap all over social media they began saying that all the money would be going to charity and I believe that this was just a way to cover themselves because they knew that they original plan was wrong and they got caught.

I have attached the link to Devin Durrant LDS page where it goes on to talk about what “Ponderize,” means because it is not a word in the dictionary it is a word that Durrant came up with himself (https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2015/10/my-heart-pondereth-them-continually?lang=eng). The meaning behind that word he says is, “I like to say it’s a combination of 80 percent extended pondering and 20 percent memorization.”

On the next article attached from KUTV a news channel in Salt Lake in goes into depth on how the who website was removed after this incident (http://kutv.com/news/local/amid-criticism-ponderize-website-removed-after-lds-general-conference.) It involves quotes from the Durrants trying to save themselves and their reputation. At the end of the day I can see both points of views but them being so involved with the LDS church they should know wrong or right and I felt like they knew this was a big risk, there is a time and place for everything.
